The Admissions Process
The application process for Community Partnership School is much like the one that Germantown Academy uses. A completed application is followed by a parent interview for applicant families and a “play day” where the child comes to CPS for interaction and observation (see below for more detail about how to apply).
Each year, CPS has approximately 12 openings in Pre-Kindergarten. Openings in other grades are minimal as most students matriculate to the next grade at CPS. We encourage families to apply early and complete each step in a timely manner. (Admission decisions are announced beginning on April 1st and application forms are accepted beginning in December.)
We are often asked what we look for in prospective CPS students. Specific answers vary depending on the particular grade level, but there are common factors that successful applicants clearly display across grade levels:
- CPS students are naturally curious and capable – Whatever the grade, students who thrive at CPS have innate academic ability and display an eagerness to learn new things.
- CPS students are resilient and kind – Because students regularly engage classmates and instructors while encountering new ideas, demonstrating age appropriate levels of self control and empathy are essential.
- CPS parents and guardians contribute positively to the school community – We view our students as extensions of their homes and successful CPS students have care givers willing to commit to active involvement.
Attending an information session provides an invaluable opportunity to have specific questions addressed by school staff and current parents. These sessions take place each year between November and March. If you have not attended an information session, please contact the school office for more detail.
How to Apply
The following list outlines the required steps for completing your child’s application to Community Partnership School. An application is not complete and ready for review until each of the items below has been sufficiently addressed and copies of appropriate forms are on file at CPS.
Step 1: Attend a CPS Information Session. In most cases, application packets are distributed at this time. (Children do not need to attend the Information Session.)
Step 2: Complete a CPS Application Form and Financial Aid Application.
Step 3: Call Starsha Jordan, Administrative Assistant, at 215-235-0461 to schedule two appointments for your child: a Saturday Playdate and a One-on-One Assessment Session for your child. Also schedule a Parent Interview for one of these dates.
Step 4: Bring your child to the scheduled Saturday Playdate (PreK and Kindergarten applicants) or to the scheduled One-on-One Assessment Session where a teacher will direct a one-on-one assessment with your child (PreK through 4th grade applicants).
Step 5: We will notify you if we would like your child to spend a day in a CPS classroom during the regular school day. During this time, teachers observe how your child plays and works with other students, listens, participates, and follows directions.
Step 6: Keep in touch with CPS if you have any questions. We will begin notifying families of admission decisions after April 1. The admission process continues until all spaces in each class are filled. If your child’s application is incomplete at this point, we will let you know.
Contact Starsha Jordan, Administrative Assistant, at 215-235-0461 or at s.jordan@cps-pk5.org for more admission and financial aid information.
