Recently, Community Partnership School was treated to a special visit from Opera North, a non-profit cultural organization in Philadelphia. Students had the opportunity to listen to opera performances, learn different musical terms, and even waltz! Visitors included Opera North singers Iris Fairfax, Allison Sanders, and Shango Lewis who explained some opera terms to students (like the difference between sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses) before singing famous opera selections to the school. The CPS students were awestruck by their performance and had lots of questions for the visitors about their jobs.
Opera North singer, Shango Lewis, sings for CPS. Opera North's mission is to make opera available to more racially diverse audiences. In addition to presenting fully-staged opera performances, such as Aida and The Marriage of Figaro, the group has also developed an education program to teach local youth about opera.
