Under the guidance of newly-hired science teacher, Ms. Esther Kim, Community Partnership School students are learning that science is all around them! Ms. Kim conducts a science experiment with the first grade. Community Partnership School was able to hire Ms. Kim to supplement science classroom learning through the generosity of the Henrietta Tower Wurts Memorial Fund. In addition, a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities enabled CPS to purchase new microscopes and other science equipment. Ms. Kim began an exciting physical science unit with the first, second, third and fourth graders this month. Right now, students are learning about the differences between gases, liquids, and solids, and have been busy conducting some very interesting experiments. For example, the fourth grade witnessed the transformation of a liquid into a solid--- by churning liquid buttermilk into solid butter! Today, the first grade also conducted an exciting experiment. Ms. Kim began by asking the young scientists to make a prediction about whether it is possible to blow up a balloon without blowing air into it. After learning about oxygen and carbon dioxide, they then created their own carbon dioxide by mixing baking soda and vinegar in a bottle. The students were excited to learn that when they put a balloon on the mouth of the bottle, it blew up! Ms. Kim and the first graders watch their balloon blow up! |
