Second Grade Spends Time with Butterflies and Dinosaurs

3/23/2009

Last week, the second graders had the opportunity to be paleontologists and entomologists for a day as they learned about dinosaurs and butterflies on a field trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.

After studying dinosaurs in class, the second graders enjoyed seeing dinosaur fossils and skeletons at the museum. They even got a chance to dig for dinosaur bones!

The second graders eagerly guess what part of a dinosaur the fossil may come from. No, it isn't a horn-- it is a tail spike from a stegosaurus!

In addition to learning how long a Tyrannosaurus Rex was (43 feet!), and how fossils are formed, the students also got to spend time in the Butterfly Room, where they saw beautiful butterflies of all shapes, sizes and colors. The students learned that in order for a butterfly to land on them, they would have to stand very still!

The class tries to tempt the butterflies to land on their arms.

A butterfly lands on a lucky second grader!
