The annual CPS Winter Assembly brought a bundle of holiday cheer to the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs this Friday. The pre-kindergarten through second grade sang songs and recited all they had learned about winter holidays to a packed house of parents, families, and friends. As the audience looked on from their seats (in chairs and the on the staircase!), pre-k and kindergarten sang a Spanish song they learned for the occasion, "Paz y Libertad", which the students explained means "Peace and Freedom" in English. Kindergarten presented on the meaning of Kwanzaa, with each student explaining a different aspect of traditions and symbolism. First grade delved into the importance of Hanukkah with a special poem all about the holiday, and second grade joined them in singing a Hanukkah Song. Second graders shared their families' Christmas traditions, some sweet and some funny, with the group, and were met with happy laughter and heartfelt applause. Music teacher Randy Pendleton then joined the students for a few holiday songs. kindergarten, first, and second grades performed "Winter Wonderland" with gusto, and everyone in the auditorium joined in for a rousing version of "Jingle Bells". The students had practiced their songs for weeks, and their hard work truly showed in their final performance. Head of School Eric Jones finished off the evening's assembly with a few words on the holidays and the work the students had done. The children were then free to join their parents for some festive refreshments. The evening ended with smiling children, proud parents, and delighted teachers all praising the students' good work. |
