First in the News

This Week's "First in the News"

This will be a busy week in First Grade as we wrap-up our predictable book study and begin learning about Thanksgiving.  Studying predictable books has been great fun!  We read several Paul Galdone predictable stories including The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Little Kittens, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Little Bears.  We started with these Galdone original versions and then read newer versions from different authors that gave a different spin on the classic tales.   The children enjoyed acting out the stories and picking their favorite versions.

In math this week, we will continue our subtraction unit.  We will compare numbers using subtraction and learn to subtract using a number line.

Did you know that we had an election for First Grade class president?  During election week, we read Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio and used this entertaining yet informative book to study the electoral process.  The children were interested to learn about the number of electoral votes for each state.  They also decided that they would like to have a class election.  We held a primary and the two winners of the primary made signs, gave speeches and campaigned throughout the week.  We voted on Friday and Amber was elected as our class president by a close vote. Congratulations, Amber!

Last Week's "First in the News"

The children had a great time studying signs last week. We went on two sign walks and took pictures of signs in our school building and around the neighborhood. We made a class book explaining the signs in our school building and the children are in the process of making individual sign books for signs in our neighborhood. This week, we will finish those books and begin our new literacy unit studying predictable books.

In math this week, we will learn about adding doubles and adding doubles plus one. We have a fun little rap that the children will learn.
